Don’t. Ha! Kidding.
Okay if you got past that one, consider your goals for starting a leather business. Do you want to explore and exercise a hobby? Do you want to build out a production studio and team? Do you want to earn extra money, or sell enough to cover expenses? Once your goal is defined, you’ll have some direction.
Who is your target audience? How will you reach them?
What do you enjoy making? I enjoy making just about everything … wallets, belts, bags, journal covers, bookmarks, etc.
What do you not enjoy doing? (For me, it’s the marketing and shipping.) What is your plan to handle this - outsource, hire someone, or do it yourself?
What is your style? Traditional, custom, one of a kind, small batch, heavily repeatable, modern, speciality, etc.?
How much will you pay yourself? Consider using the profit calculator to determine your profit/loss point, and input your hourly rate to pay yourself a healthy wage.
Consider how you want to spend your time in order to sell your goods. Online? In person? Custom only? Small batch only?
There are many points to consider, but these are some starting questions. It’s not an easy path, but a rewarding one.
